What does it mean to attend to the presence of God? What exactly am I attending to? Oftentimes we'd like God's work in our life to be special and flashy. But God delights to work through ordinary means. We want to cultivate a growing trust that God is forming us through mundane means, every single day. What God asks of us is to be present and to live in reality.

It's not enough

What do you need? More time? More money? More support? More sleep? More pain relief? More willpower? I don’t know what it is, but I know there’s not enough. There’s never enough. I always need more! And, it seems, that God isn’t doing much to meet my needs. He hasn’t brought my ship in yet, nor has he healed my broken relationships. He hasn’t guaranteed my life will be free from war, hunger, or disease, and he certainly doesn’t magically give me more willpower to resist sin. So, what gives? Here’s a story I think can help.

Hospitality is life

Hospitality is life itself. Humans need to be accepted by other humans. They need to know their life has a place and a purpose. They need something to root them to the present, to stop their whirring thoughts about the future for a moment. They need to be a guest. Sitting at a table, welcomed into a home, eating and drinking, connecting the body to the soul, these things are life, and hospitality makes it happen.

The story of Mary and Martha teaches us much about Christian contemplation. It shows us that the key is attending to God word. It's not that Mary was meditating and Martha was working, but rather that Martha let her sister distract her from attending to Jesus' words. So let's be all ears for Jesus.
