The Leap of Faith: Kierkegaard, Anxiety, and the Art of Spiritual Direction
Join us for this Spiritual Direction Continuing Education Course!
Transformation isn’t always peaceful. The spiritual journey is often like walking along a cliff's edge, where anxiety is high and the only way forward is a terrifying leap of faith! What is the compassionate spiritual director to do when there’s nothing for it but to jump? Are we ready to notice these terrifying but holy moments in the lives of our directees? In our own?
This class looks to the poet-theologian Søren Kierkegaard — an unsung master of spiritual direction — to guide us along this treacherous path. We'll learn to experience anxiety as a necessary precondition for faith – the Holy Spirit’s invitation to powerful, if terrifying, new depths of surrender. We’ll also explore how to patiently accompany people in their despair—their failures to leap—without coercing them or enabling their sin.
As a spiritual director, you will gain the courage to support your directees in their “holy crises” without trying to rescue them. You will practice noticing the cliff’s edges in their spiritual journeys and pointing them to the true life that comes by following Jesus to the cross.
A live, 2.5 hour continuing education course for spiritual directors.
- An accessible survey of Kierkegaard's philosophy: Wisdom from the "Father of Existentialism" made easy to understand and digest.
- Immediately practical: Insights and paradigm shifts that will improve your practice right away.
- Built-in practice: Our courses always include guided practicums so you can try out what you've learned and receive live feedback from the instructor.
