2024 Annual REport

A message from the president

Transcript

Modern life is chaotic. Recent reports expose the pressure we are under:

  • 27% of adults polled said that most days they are so stressed they cannot function (source).
  • 44% of employees feel burned out at work (source).
  • 30% of Americans under 34 say they feel lonely every day of the week (source).
  • 51% feel “used up” at the end of the workday (source).
  • 48% of employed Americans consider themselves modern—day “workaholics” (source).

We've created a society that celebrates exhaustion and independence as status symbols. "I'm so busy" has become our modern humble-brag, and "hustle culture" is our new religion.

We're not just tired – we're trapped in a cycle of perpetual motion that we've mistaken for a sign of virtue.

But here’s the dirty little secret: our obsession with productivity is a form of idolatry. It’s an attempt to control our world and justify our own existence. And like all pagan gods eventually do, “Productivity” demands human sacrifice. It demands that we sacrifice ourselves and our loved ones on the altar of work in exchange for good reputation, a fat paycheck, or self-satisfaction.

Signpost Inn Ministries is a refuge in the midst of the chaos of noise, demands, and hustle. But more than that we point people’s attention to Jesus—who is our sabbath rest.

Of course, there are many obstacles that prevent people from resting in Christ’s grace and providence. We’re distracted, afraid, and cynical. Is Jesus really good? Does he really love me? Can I really trust him? Even if I do want to rest in him, how do I do that!?

I get it. Scripture, the church, leadership, authority, religion, these things have been weaponized and diluted so frequently in today’s world many people don’t know where to look or whom to trust.

And that’s why Signpost Inn offers a different approach. We don’t offer more programs. We’re not another spiritual workout routine. Instead we offer simple hospitality. We meet people with genuine interest and compassion. We walk alongside everyone in need of a soul-friend and together we lift our gaze from the chaos of life, and fix our attention on the real, loving, presence of Jesus Christ.

He is the true savior. The true healer. The true director. The true source of peace and rest. Signpost Inn helps Christians from all walks of life connect more deeply with Him.

Getting this bite-sized, digital magazine is like receiving letters from close friends who encourage you to fix your attention on Jesus. They are theologically faithful, always practical, and exceedingly timely!

Our new book!

In 2024 Brandon and Liv completed and published their book, Not Home Yet: How to be Human in an Inhuman World. It has received great praise and is available on our store and on Amazon as a print and Kindle ebook. Look for the audio book version in 2025!

New Resources

We also created unique resources to support your faith and prayer life.

A growing community of Spiritual Directors

In 2024 we officially launched our monthly newsletter for spiritual directors and planned an awesome series of lectures for our 2025 virtual meetups.

Signpost Inn Evenings

Nearly every Wednesday night we host an open gathering for people to come enjoy good food, fellowship and conversation. Attendance varies between a few people to a few dozen people. In the latter half of the year we focused on reading C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters out loud and discussing it as we went. We've started off 2025 by reading Liv's and Brandon's book.

Stories from the inn

What's Spiritual Direction?

I’m 51 years old and until about a year ago, I had never even heard of “spiritual direction.” And then, when I did hear about it, it seemed way too mystical and mysterious for a recovering fundamentalist (I’ve been recovering for a couple decades now). But when, after talking about the tremendous life upheavals I’ve been through in the last few years, a friend and supporter offered to make meeting with a spiritual director a reality—I thought “what can I lose?”

I’m not sure I can ever thank Brandon enough for being my hiking guide, my sherpa for the last several months. My eyes are being opened to the importance of being quiet with God, of listening, of resting, and of believing what is true about Jesus and about myself. Every time we meet, I’m left feeling a little more at peace and believing the truth a little more.

Thank you and Liv so much for everything you did both beforehand and throughout the weekend to prepare a space and create an atmosphere for us to connect more deeply with God and with each other. I didn't really know what I was signing up for in coming, but God definitely met me there, led me throughout the weekend, and did exactly what He wanted to do with the time.

Signpost Inn Evenings

On Wednesday nights at Signpost Inn, it is evident to me that God is present. The atmosphere and setting envelops me in God's love and mercy, and the conversation and understanding that are offered there leave me feeling filled and recharged.

God is present in a tangible way on Wednesday evenings. The culture at Signpost Inn is one of compassion and humility and companionship. They remind me that, even though I struggle, God is for me and God is with me on my journey, as are my friends. It is here, here at the Inn, where I feel that I have the freedom to rest from striving with good food and good people. Through the conversations the Holy Spirit speaks, breathing life in me, giving me the strength and endurance to carry on.
