The Saints Were A Mess, Too!
The saints’ lives were messy. Their attempts at being “good enough” ended in ruin. But Jesus loved them. He loves me too. And he died to prove it.
Here I am, on a random Tuesday, exhausted.
The mental list I’ve been keeping of all the ways I’ve fallen short this week as a wife, friend, and a Daughter of God, stretches before me. The enemy is, of course, taking full advantage of the situation, and using my To Do Better list to beat me over the head until I am weary and discouraged.
Do you ever feel this way, too, friend?
I WANT to be more patient, kind, loving, etc. I WANT the fruits of the Spirit to be evident in my life. But why is it so hard? And why do I keep making the same mistakes over and over again?!
Won’t God get tired of loving me if I don’t show him that I can improve, that I am really trying?
And yet, even now, I hear the voice of Jesus in Psalm 103. The tune that my mom taught us to help us remember scripture still plays in my head:
“Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him
For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.” (Psalm 103:13-14, NASB1995)
The words remind me that even the saints were a mess. And that God has never held back his love.
I remember that the Apostle Paul persecuted the very people he would later serve alongside.
That the disciples abandoned and denied Jesus in the moment of greatest need.
That King David, a “man after God’s own heart,” was also a lying, cheating scumbag.
That even Abraham didn’t trust God all that much when God promised to give him a son through Sarah.
So, yes, I’m a mess. But I’m in good company!
The saints’ lives were messy, too. Their attempts at being “good enough” ended in ruin, too.
But Jesus loved them. He held them. He remembered that “they were but dust.” And he remembers me too. He loves me too. And he died to prove it.
Friend, if you can relate to this, even in a small way, please be encouraged. Christ is not looking for perfection. He’s looking for his beloved one (that’s you!), so he can scoop you up in his arms. Rest in his love!
