Prayer for Christmas Grief

Let’s be honest, Christmas is not always a happy time. Perhaps you’re spending it alone? Grieving a broken relationship or the loss of a loved one?
In this crazy world, PEACE and JOY can feel IMPOSSIBLE. And the cultural imperative that this should be “the most wonderful time of the year,” just serves to highlight the ways things aren’t wonderful at all!
If that’s you this Christmas season, know that I see you, and your grief is valid. And I want to share with you a simple prayer practice.
Mary’s Christmas Prayer.
When Gabriel visited Mary he told her something IMPOSSIBLE: “You have found favor with God!”
Mary asked, “How can this be!”
Gabriel smiled and replied, “Nothing is impossible with God!”
So Mary gently bowed her head and prayed, “Behold, I am the Lord’s servant, may it happen to me as you have said.”
How?
The practice is simple. Whenever you notice your attention has been stolen by grief or sadness:
- Close your eyes and breathe a deep sigh of lament to the Lord. Let your body and your breath ask, “Lord, how can this be!?”
- Then bow your head, turn the eyes of your spirit upward, and say (out loud if possible), “Behold I am the Lord’s servant, may all things happen to me according to thy will, Amen.”
